risr/advance Student preferred name
It would be good if 'Preferred Name' was available on risr/advance user profile and that this be an editable field by the student if they wanted to update, keeping their enrolled name in the system that is not able to be edited if the permission is set that way. Often international students choose an anglo name but it is not their enrolled name

Thanks very much for your suggestion here.
Have you tried adding the 'preferred name' as a user field? This is commonly what our customers do to provide students with a field within their profile where they can choose a nominated preferred name.
I am assuming that the connected piece in terms of this suggestion is that you're also wanting to prevent someone from being able to edit their first name and last name when they are editing their profile?

We could do this but the preferred name wouldn’t be the name that would appear if they sent assessment to a supervisor on the email notifications and form? I would like the preferred name to appear as often the supervisors only know the student as their preferred name.
As a University we should be using a students legally enrolled name for assessment - we had a student update their name to their preferred name as we had granted students profile editing so they could upload their profile pic and this name change was an unintended consequence, albeit I can fully understand why the student did it. -

Thanks for the clarifications. Could I please ask what you would ideally expect then if the system were to have some kind of preferred name function. Who would see the preferred name and in which cases? Or would you expect that everyone would always see the preferred name alongside the enrolled name?
For example, there are multiple different areas of the system where the name of a user is displayed:
- In the blue navigation bar when viewing their portfolio
- At the top of an event that has been sent to you to fill in
- In the section of an event to indicate who filled it in
- In the output of a report
- The users list
- In the email notification which indicates who has sent you an invitation
At the moment, all these places simply display the 'full name' of the user. If there were a concept of preferred name, how would you see these areas changing, or not? Would the preferred name be displayed alongside the full name everywhere, or would you see that as an issue?

I am so sorry for the delay in responding - I seem to have missed your reply.
Ideally I would like the name structure displayed as this everywhere in the system:
First Name (Preferred Name) Last Name i.e. Xue (Cindy) Lim
If I were to prioritise, it would be the email notification and assessment form for supervisors. Often supervisors do not know the students by their full legal name, so it is quite confusing for supervisors. -

I echo this request. In response to your question, for our context it would be great for users to be able to choose between having either their first name or their preferred displayed for all the instances that you listed below. Alternatively, I would be happy to see the preferred name displayed everywhere alongside the full name. Thanks!
